Urban Farming

since 2020

Blokgarden perustettiin vuonna 2020 Jarnon autotallissa.

Herttoniemi Metro Garden Roof for Pollinators

Together with the Humblebee Housing Project, we implemented a pollinator-friendly area on the roof of the metro entrance, filling a gap along the existing ecological corridor.

We designed and implemented the project with meadow boxes connected to a remote-controlled irrigation system, the condition of which can be monitored using the system's sensors. Bumblebees and bees brought to the farm can provide data on the vegetation in the surrounding area through eDNA testing and verify the project's impacts as part of an ecological corridor.

The project was part of Forum Virium's Pilot Green project 2025

Urban food jungle

We created a work called City Food Jungle in the interior of Finlayson in Tampere together with the artist collective Phazer Crane. The work was part of the Tampere City Behind the Scenes exhibition 2024.

Mukkula's Magic

Together with ARK GROUP Oy, we designed and implemented a green area that mimics nature next to S-Market.

We preserved the existing vegetation adapted to the area, added dead wood and insect hotel fences, planted trees, shrubs and berry bushes, sowed perennials suitable for the scorching environment, created an edible planting area with vegetable sacks, and built an easy-to-navigate path and a picnic area for residents to use.

The area increases biodiversity and benefits insects, as well as strengthening climate resilience and soil vitality. The area also has value in terms of resident amenity and community use. Organic implementation reduces the need for maintenance.

VISION 2030 Exhibition

Our food system is in trouble and scaling up in times of crisis is difficult. We are dependent on imports for products and inputs.

Decentralized food production could provide up to 30% of our daily needs.

VISION 2030 was an exhibition we organized that presented our vision and new production methods and techniques that can scale urban farming into a significant means of food production through civic action during crises.

Waste bags

We implemented waste park bags in Suvilahti, Hiedanranta and Mukkula, which we made from recycled materials and used damaged and unsold resque plants from nurseries and stores as plants.

The waste garden bag is equipped with a 25L water tank and a passive irrigation system to reduce the need for maintenance and can be moved by forklift or hand truck.

The planting of the bags was carried out through community outreach, where we invited the residents of the area to participate in activities for biodiversity. The harvest is available for all passersby to use.
